Celebrate Dia de Reyes in Mexico

Every January 6th, Mexico celebrates "Dia de Reyes" (Three Kings Day/Epiphany), a holiday totally dedicated to the family's youngest members. The tradition of the Three Wise Men is one of the oldest in Mexico, beginning since the Spanish colonization; today, many families continue to celebrate this special date where children are the protagonists.

During the mornings of this date, children wake up excited to open the gifts that the Three Wise Men have left for them, either under the foot of the Christmas tree or next to their shoes. This is a holiday full of games, family gatherings, and spectacular commemorative events held in various destinations around the country.

You can't miss the wonderful experience of living a Three Kings Day in Cancun, surrounded by beach, sun, and sand. Cancun offers many traditions and activities to enjoy this day to the fullest. Learn more about this day below.

What to do in Cancun on Dia de Reyes?

Just like Christmas, on this date, children write a letter to the Three Wise Men, where they tell how they behaved during the year and what they would like to receive as a gift. The tradition used to be to leave the letters next to the shoes on the night of January 5; however, nowadays, this tradition has been transformed; some children even use a balloon to send the letters to the Three Wise Men.

On this day, it is customary to break and eat the famous Rosca de Reyes accompanied by a delicious hot chocolate. What is Rosca de Reyes? This is a baked sweet bread in a circular shape, which contains nuts, dried fruit, figs, and acitron, among many other ingredients depending on taste.

This food has a representation; its shape resembles a crown adorned with nuts that are its jewels. The "Rosca" hides several "muñequitos" (little plastic dolls) inside the bread, and when you take one out, it symbolizes baby Jesus. Traditionally, the one who finds a plastic doll is the one who will take care of the baby Jesus until February 2 (Dia de la Candelaria).

To enjoy your Rosca accompanied by a delicious coffee or hot chocolate, we recommend you to visit some of the best coffee shops in Cancun: Marakeme Cafe, Cafe con Gracia, Cafe Antonieta, Cafe LUED, Pepe Piraña Cafe. Cafe Nader, Cafe del Profesor, Gelato Cafe, among others.
